Nice Maine Assassination Threat, Vol. 1
Here's a nice assassination threat from a guy in Milo, Maine on the Bangor Daily News website:

That moron Al Sharpton has been threatening riots since spring any time there was a question that Obama wouldn’t havre his behind polished. My reation: Let them destroy their neighborhoods. This time no white businesses will come back to rebuild the areas. Let them live without supermarkets and pharmacies. Let them pay three times as much for foood in a convenience store or starve. Above all, let them reap the fruits of Obama’s self-fulfilling racist ploy. It is set to backfire in a huge way.

What Milo fails to realize is that the median household in the US has wealth of about $62,000. Now, $62,000 is not insignificant, but if you consider that the top 1 percent of households’ average wealth is $12.5 million, you can see what a difference there is in the distribution. Really, taking the numbers at face value, 85%, as a matter of proportion, still represents a suffocating burden on the middle.
If you are student of Maine history you will find umpteen examples of basically poor people vociferously defending the rights of the rich to stay rich and the working class to stay poor.
Cf. the ease at which corporations and the patrician press have been able to gin up populist aggression against unions and collective bargaining, ie. 1987 IP strike in Jay, 1986 Boise Cascade strike in Rumford.

Not just in Maine. One person on a message board I frequent said that if The Rich (his capitalizations) were taxed more highly, he thought he should be taxed more highly as well to make it "fair." Of course, when reminded that the higher taxes were a rescinding of the Bush tax cuts, he had no answer for why his (and my) taxes should go up because wealthy people and corporations got a tax break six years ago.
I read once that middle income people once identified most closely with the class below them, thinking there but for the grace of God go I, making people more generous and amenable to government intervention. Since Reagan's war on the poor, though, it now seems people are more likely to identify with the3 class above them-resulting in loathing and contempt for the poor, as well as the huge amounts of personal debt we have all accumulated.
