Clifton, Maine is a beautiful and tiny community along the Airline Road about 25 miles east of Brewer and Bangor.
Like so much of central and eastern Maine, Clifton is poor and very isolated. And like most rural and poor parts of Maine you will find people of all political stripes living there. One of the unpleasant truths about places like Clifton, Maine is the very high degree of racial bigotry which still exists. Below is one example:
---
Student from Maine expelled, charged with hate crimes
By The Associated Press
HAMDEN, Conn. — Quinnipiac University has expelled three white students after police charged them with making harassing phone calls to black players on the school’s men’s and women’s basketball teams.
Hamden police say they charged 18-year-old Charles Merritt of Clifton, Maine, with hate crimes after he made threatening and harassing phone calls that included racist remarks to three players on the men’s team on Monday.
Merritt, a freshman, was a roommate of two of the players and knew the third, police said. He was charged with three counts each of intimidation based on bigotry and bias, harassment and disorderly conduct.
Emily Loschiavo of West Newbury, Vt., and Courtney Stellwag of Newburgh, N.Y., both 19, are accused in a separate incident of making harassing calls to a resident assistant’s room at a Quinnipiac dorm on Tuesday night. They are charged with harassment.
The New Haven Register reported Thursday that the calls to the RA’s room were answered by two black players on the women’s basketball team who are friends with the resident assistant. Police said both players were threatened with bodily harm.
The three students who were arrested did not respond to e-mails seeking comment.
Hamden police Capt. Ronald Smith said the phone calls came several days after slurs were discovered on poster and cork boards outside the dorm rooms of the three players on the men’s team.
Smith said the written slurs included a racial epithet and a drawing of a Nazi swastika.

Nice Maine Assassination Threat, Vol. 1
Here's a nice assassination threat from a guy in Milo, Maine on the Bangor Daily News website:

I also have been wondering what Obama and his charming wife Godzilla Racist, will tell the rioters. I think Buraq 08 has it @50, paragraph 2.
That moron Al Sharpton has been threatening riots since spring any time there was a question that Obama wouldn’t havre his behind polished. My reation: Let them destroy their neighborhoods. This time no white businesses will come back to rebuild the areas. Let them live without supermarkets and pharmacies. Let them pay three times as much for foood in a convenience store or starve. Above all, let them reap the fruits of Obama’s self-fulfilling racist ploy. It is set to backfire in a huge way.

Finally, the truth comes out. And, if you are wondering why Obama has been so successful, read this: Obama uses mass hypnosis techniques. This PDF article, although long, really explains why people are calling Obama "the One," "the messiah" "JFK" and fainting at his speaches. See for yourself. This might be the reason he wants 30 minutes of prime-time right before the election. One last shot to brainwash the masses.

Fear of a Black President
What say ye, PUMAs?

Pardon me — I’m just a 50 yr old Vietnam Vets wife scared to death of what is about to take over this country, to the point we’re ready to move back to Texas and seceed from the Union. We lived through the Carter years & fear those will be cherrished as the “good ole days”!

We need to ask President Bush to SUSPEND ELECTIONS for 60 days - start over - this isn’t American Idol - this is our future! Call or write President Bush and ask him to suspend the elections - it will take 60 days to sort out all of the fraudulent votes after Nov 4th anyways!

Obama is a completely made up entity. Nothing about him that we have been told is true or real. He is an advertising cult creation, like a Halloween costume one puts on over something else. The "something else" in Obama's case is such a flawed, narcissistic personality who lacks conscience and feels deep antipathy toward his country and whites and large segments of the population. While all who run for president seem to have large "egos", which they need to have in order to absorb the knocks they get and still function, this guy goes way beyond that, to the Napoleon or Hitler or McCarthy personna.
---
Mark Levin, National Review Online:
There is a cult-like atmosphere around Barack Obama, which his campaign has carefully and successfully fabricated, which concerns me. The messiah complex. Fainting audience members at rallies. Special Obama flags and an Obama presidential seal. A graphic with the portrayal of the globe and Obama’s name on it, which adorns everything from Obama’s plane to his street literature. Young school children singing songs praising Obama. Teenagers wearing camouflage outfits and marching in military order chanting Obama’s name and the professions he is going to open to them. An Obama world tour, culminating in a speech in Berlin where Obama proclaims we are all citizens of the world. I dare say, this is ominous stuff.

Indeed.

Whether through wickedness, ideology, stupidity or derangement, they firmly believe that the ultimate source of conflict in the world derives at root from America and Israel, whose societies, culture and values they want to see emasculated or destroyed altogether. A Terraced Hillside Vegetable Garden -- How to do it on the Cheap
Our house next to the Kennebec River in Augusta, Maine is on a steep slope. So the house lots are terraced from one lot up to the next. This is an experiment in terracing the terrace, so that we can maximize the vegetable growing potential of our 1/5th acre lot. This stuff has been done by people for 10,000 years. But I have the advantage of sophisticated power tools, sports talk radio, a six pack of Molson Canadian Ale and large nails.
This design uses a 2x12x8 board as the front plate with a stack of three 4x4s for the sides. The 4x4s are 4 feet long and staggered down to 30 inches at the bottom to accommodate the slope. I used pointed 2x4s cut to 18 inches to bind the 4x4s together, joined with 20D 4 inch spikes.
The 2x12 front plates are nailed to the ends of the 4x4 groups with 4 inch 20D spikes (one spike in each 4x4), to which I will add 4 inch L-brackets on the corners for additional strength. The front plates have 24 inch 2x4 spiked studs buried into the ground to prevent the front plates from bending or slumping due to frost heaves and soil creep.
Here are the terraced beds, at left, from the view of the giant silver maple tree in our back yard in May 2009.
Here they are in early April 2010, about 18 months after I built them in October 2008. They are in good condition with no sign of warping or collapse. So far so good.

David Sedaris on Undecided Voters:
I look at these people and can't quite believe that they exist. Are they professional actors? I wonder. Or are they simply laymen who want a lot of attention?
To put them in perspective, I think of being on an airplane. The flight attendant comes down the aisle with her food cart and, eventually, parks it beside my seat. "Can I interest you in the chicken?" she asks. "Or would you prefer the platter of shit with bits of broken glass in it?"
To be undecided in this election is to pause for a moment and then ask how the chicken is cooked.

Flyaway Pond, North Easton, Mass.
When Mr. John Grant came up to me in the receiving line at my father's funeral at Copeland's Funeral Home in North Easton in July 1996, the first thing he said was, "We got Flyaway Pond."
By this John Grant meant that he and others in Easton twisted many arms and checkbooks to purchase from the Mailiff heirs for millions of dollars the freshwater meadow that used to be called Flyaway Pond so that it would not be turned into ugly McMansions like what the DeCoutos did next door.
Now my nephew, Danny, can go bow hunting at Flyaway with his Dad and watch great horned owls fly over his head at dusk while sitting on a giant rock.
Here is another view of Flyaway and the tiny brook emanating from Lincoln Spring next to the Easton Lutheran Church and the Town Pool. The song is "Hani" by Ali Farka Toure, which is about a girl who wants an expensive pair of shoes. The person in this is Tim Watts. We made this on Thanksgiving morning, 2003.

Winston Munn says ...
There can never be a sustained longterm reversal until as a nation the United States abandons the concept that Military Keynesianism is a valid substitute for real investment and stops pouring its GNP into the black hole that is the Military Industrial Complex.
As a nation, it is imperative we abandon the self-deception that we were granted a divine right to intervene wherever we see fit and create by force Mini Me Americas.
Andrew Bacevich supports this view when he says, "Rather than becoming better at waging imperial wars, we need to move to a non-imperial foreign policy. That argument is not a moral argument—although you could make a moral argument—but a pragmatic one, that the prospect of more such wars is going to bankrupt us."
If anyone wants to find the root cause of the secular bear market, he needs look no further than the rise of The American Empire, disguised by the false morality of belief that exceptionalism granted rights of interventionism.
Empire is not a force for good; it is a force for conquest; and the vanquished must be looted to support the cost of victory.

George Smith: Manure Merchant
To the Editor, Kennebec Journal, Oct. 2, 2008:
The amount of manure that George Smith is able to stuff into one column never ceases to amaze me. His diatribe on listing the Atlantic salmon as an endangered species (Sept. 24) is rife with misinformation and employs his usual scare tactics to inflame an uneducated public.
Had Angus King succeeded in preventing the listing of the Atlantic salmon, he would have been the one individual most responsible for their demise in the U.S. Thankfully, the federal government did the right thing by giving the salmon protection and it is now proposing to finish the job by protecting salmon in the Androscoggin, Kennebec and Penobscot rivers.
Claims by Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins that "state restorative efforts" can best increase salmon populations are a joke.
Maine doesn't even have the resources to keep its residents warm in the winter.
It was on the state's watch that salmon were nearly wiped out, thanks to inadequate controls on timber harvesting, agriculture and aquaculture, which all combined to damage and destroy salmon and their habitat.
Atlantic salmon are coming back. In the Sandy River, they're reproducing again for the first time in more than 150 years -- and their offspring are also returning to spawn. The potential for Atlantic salmon restoration and the resulting environmental, economic and social benefits, especially in the Kennebec River drainage, is enormous. Federal protection and funding, however, are needed if this potential is ever to be realized.

Restoring a natural resource which has been destroyed is a difficult job.
Bill Townsend says:
This column is a response to George Smith's recent column about the proposed Endangered Species Act listing for Atlantic salmon in the Penobscot, Kennebec and Androscoggin rivers (Sept. 24).
Atlantic salmon are a native species, so numerous when the first European settlers arrived in New England four centuries ago as to boggle their minds. Historical records show runs of hundreds of thousands of these fish in Maine's rivers.
Overfishing, pollution and dam construction without fish passage reduced this incredible resource to runs in a few rivers in Washington County by the middle of the 20th century.
The state of Maine recognized in 1947 that it would be unconscionable to allow the last remaining Atlantic salmon in the United States to join the passenger pigeon and the American bison in the ranks of once-great populations of wildlife destroyed by human greed.
In a poignant report, a special gubernatorial commission urged the state to take immediate action to protect Atlantic salmon.
The Legislature created the Atlantic Sea Run Salmon Commission in 1948, merged into the Department of Marine Resources as the Bureau of Sea Run Fisheries and Habitat in 2007. The agency has done yeoman work under the leadership of Horace Bond, Al Meister, Ed Baum and now Pat Keliher to protect Atlantic salmon in Maine.
In 1967, enactment of the federal Anadromous Fisheries Restoration Act led to the federal program to restore Atlantic salmon in much of its former habitat. The Penobscot River was chosen as the flagship for restoration.
That program continues today. The results have often been discouraging. Restoring a natural resource which has been destroyed is a difficult job.
But it is necessary, because how we treat the other species that share the planet with us is a measure of our humanity. Just like eagles and grizzly bears, we are restoring Atlantic salmon for their own sake, not merely to satisfy anglers.
Because they are born in fresh water, migrate to sea and return as adults to reproduce, the complex life cycle of Atlantic salmon makes them difficult to manage. In fresh water, dams, pollution and poaching take their toll. In the ocean, it has taken two decades of international negotiation to control commercial fishing of Atlantic salmon.
Yet bit by painful bit, there is progress. The plan to remove two dams on the Penobscot River is a case in point. No one should expect the legacy of centuries of environmental harm to be reversed overnight. But something worth doing must be done well, and doing it well takes time, energy and commitment.
There is real cause for hope. In 2008, returns of Atlantic salmon to the rivers of Maine, and around the North Atlantic, showed a significant increase over recent years. More than 2,000 fish returned to the Penobscot, more than double the average of the preceding five years. Whether this is the beginning of a trend, only time will tell. But despite the nay-sayers, short-term considerations cannot override the principles evoked in the 1947 report.
The Atlantic salmon is a species in deep trouble. Through the medium of the Endangered Species Act, the United States has established a mechanism for addressing the needs of species in trouble. The Act has been profoundly beneficial in its nearly 40 years of existence. In spite of the dire predictions made when Atlantic salmon were listed as endangered in Washington County, there has been no detriment to the economy of that region arising from the listing.
An Endangered Species Act listing of Atlantic salmon in the Penobscot, Kennebec and Androscoggin rivers will not bring the economic doom that George Smith has predicted. It will enable fishery managers to bring about the changes that are necessary for a healthy eco-system in which Atlantic salmon, other fish, birds, mammals and human beings alike can all thrive.
Clinton B. Townsend is a Skowhegan attorney and president of Maine Rivers. He was appointed by President George H.W. Bush as a U.S. commissioner to the North Atlantic Salmon Conservation Organization, where he served from 1990-94. He is vice chairman and secretary of the Atlantic Salmon Federation and a past president of the Maine Council of the Atlantic Salmon Federation.

As a politician you are supposed to understand symbolism, as in you don't show up at a rally in Boston wearing a New York Yankees hat. So it is disconcerting to see that Barack Obama does not have the political smarts to know it looks really bad to be rushing to the assistance of Hank Paulson and George Bush, who desperately require all of the minuscule taxable earnings of poor black people in Louisiana for the next 20 years to prop up the wealth and reputation of their billionaire friends.
